Established to foster sensible approaches for environmental and energy resource utilization along with protecting communities from hazards.
The Center’s specialties include assessment and mitigation of major hazards impacting communities; remediation studies of pollution in natural settings; and evaluation of natural resources for potential production of energy, especially the production of renewable energy.
The staff of the CNR integrates comprehensive field measurements with powerful computational models. The CNR conducts studies ranging from the microscopic scale to the landscape scale and utilizes advanced networks of sensors. The Center is internationally known for its long-term studies of major disasters, such as the Exxon Valdez and the Gulf of America spills, Hurricane Sandy, and the COVID pandemic. The Center’s publications have been in renowned journals, such as NATURE Geosciences and Environmental Science and Technology. The CNR collaborates with a broad range of constituents, including federal, industrial, and regional foundations to create sustainable approaches that adequately balance the diversity of public and private interests.

Sustainability Fair 2025 – CNR Presentation
Second Annual Sustainability Tabling Fair hosted by the NJIT Office of Sustainability
The Second Annual Sustainability Tabling Fair, hosted by the NJIT Office of Sustainability at the Upper Green, brought together students, faculty, and campus organizations to showcase ongoing efforts to support people, planet, and prosperity. The event highlighted NJIT’s commitment to sustainable practices through interactive displays and student engagement.
The NJIT Center for Natural Resources (CNR) participated with two tables, presenting innovative demonstrations on urban flooding and climate resilience. Using 3D surface models, flood simulation systems, and drone technology, the team illustrated how advanced tools are applied to study stormwater, assess risks, and design sustainable infrastructure solutions. Students and visitors engaged in lively discussions, learning how research connects to real-world challenges and community resilience.
