The Center for Natural Resources (CNR) was established to foster practical approaches for environmental and energy resource utilization and to protect communities from environmental disasters.

Our specialties include the assessment and mitigation of major hazards; remediation studies of pollution in natural settings; and the evaluation of natural resources for potential energy production, especially renewable energy.

Our researchers conduct studies ranging from the microscopic to the landscape scale, integrate comprehensive field measurements with powerful computational models, and use advanced sensor networks. We collaborate with a broad range of regional, industrial, and federal constituents to develop sustainable approaches that balance diverse public and private interests.

CNR is internationally known for long-term studies of major disasters, including Exxon Valdez and the Gulf of America oil spills, Hurricane Sandy, and the COVID pandemic. The Center’s publications have also appeared in renowned journals, including NATURE Geoscience and Environmental Science & Technology.

Board of Overseers Excellence in Research Prize and Medal

The Excellence in Research Prize and Medal is awarded in recognition of a sustained record of contributions that have enhanced the reputation of NJIT.

In 2022, the NJIT Board of Overseers honored CNR Director Michel Boufadel, distinguished professor of civil and environmental engineering, for his research and expertise in environmental fluid mechanics and hydrology.

2026 Dana Knox Student Research Showcase – CNR Presentation

At the 2026 Dana Knox Student Research Showcase, the Center for Natural Resources (CNR) presented findings on urban flooding, climate resilience, and environmental modeling.

CNR students had the opportunity to connect with faculty, peers, board members, and guests, highlighting the Center's innovative research and commitment to building more sustainable, resilient communities.

With a dedication to fostering both student and public engagement and to bridging the gap between industry and academia, the showcase is just one of the many events CNR contributes to.
