The Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) Laboratory at New Jersey Institute of Technology is a shared solution-state NMR facility in the Department of Chemistry and Environmental Science, located in Tiernan Hall, Room B008, on the NJIT campus in Newark, New Jersey. The laboratory has two superconducting spectrometers that operate at 7.05 T and 11.75 T (300 MHz and 500 MHz proton Larmor frequencies) and offers instrument access, hands-on training, experiment design, and data interpretation support to undergraduates, graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty.
Mission
The mission of the NMR Laboratory is to make NMR spectroscopy available to the NJIT research community and to external academic and industrial users. The facility supports structure elucidation of organic and organometallic compounds, reaction monitoring, purity assessment, quantitative analysis, and characterization of polymers, small molecules, and materials in solution. Established in 2019, the laboratory serves both coursework and funded research programs.

Available experiments
The 500 MHz spectrometer supports one-dimensional ¹H, ¹³C{¹H}, DEPT, APT, ¹⁹F, ³¹P, and heteronuclear observation across the broadband range, together with gradient-selected two-dimensional experiments including COSY, TOCSY, HSQC, HMBC, NOESY, ROESY, and DOSY. Variable-temperature operation supports kinetics, dynamic NMR, and conformational studies. Quantitative NMR (qNMR) with defined relaxation delays and internal standards is available for purity and concentration determination.
The 300 MHz spectrometer supports routine one-dimensional ¹H, ¹³C{¹H}, ¹⁹F, and ³¹P acquisition and is well suited to high-throughput sample screening, teaching laboratories, and reaction monitoring. Because this instrument has no pulsed field gradients, two-dimensional experiments on it rely on phase cycling rather than gradient selection.
Access and training
All users must complete instrument training before operating independently. Training covers sample preparation, shimming, locking, standard acquisition parameters, processing in TopSpin and MNova, and laboratory safety, including the magnetic fringe field and cryogen handling (see the Training Tab on this page).
