Steven Habeb is majoring in biology. From his childhood, Steven hopes to make a difference in the world through medicine. He dreams of becoming a pediatrician to help kids of various ages on the journey of growth. He was raised as part of the Boy Scouts of America and fell in love with nature and its jaw-dropping views. | |
Brock Shahinian is majoring in Environmental Science. They plan to pursue a graduate degree and are interested in becoming a researcher, specifically studying disturbance ecology. At NJIT, he’s doing research on bee morphology changes in brownfields vs. greenfields (Urban Ecology Lab), and ant morphology changes over time on an island system (Barden Lab). In summer 2023, he participated in the NJIT BioSMART REU, uncovering mercury sorption behavior in two species of bacteria that could be used in mercury bioremediation. In summer 2024, he participated in the Cornell Summer Scholars Program assessing how fungal pesticides impact earthworm mortality and behavior in agricultural systems. He spends his free time running a rock band on campus and catching bugs. | |
Andrea Gomez is studying biology with a minor in environmental sciences. Inspired by the nature from her home country, she wishes to study study plant life and insects. She is interested in a career in research where she hopes to make an impact in this world. | |
Iman Elsherif is studying Biology with a concentration in Cell Biology and a minor in Literature. She intends on applying to Veterinary Schools to pursue a career as a licensed DVM/VMD and is likewise interested in research in Ecology and Environmental Sustainability and how she can make a difference in her career. She loves reading and hopes to author a book one day and otherwise loves being outside, playing video games, baking, and exploring different creative outlets. | |
Sabrina Gerace is an Environmental Science major with Environmental Engineering and Chemistry minors. She plans to pursue a graduate degree in environmental engineering. After graduating in 2025 she hopes to work on site remediation in NJ. She loves listening to music, crocheting, biking, and baking in her free time. | |
Cean Tenorio is majoring in Biochemistry. He plans to either pursue a career in medicine or earn a graduate degree in biochemistry. He loves to experience the beauty of nature by going to different beaches and going for nature walks/hikes. He hopes to spread awareness to the importance of environmental sustainability for the survival of our future generations and our planet. | |
Melis Geckin is studying Biology with a concentration in Neurobiology. She plans to pursue a graduate degree in Neuroscience. She is interested in learning more about the conservation of nature and its positive psychological impacts on people. She enjoys reading, playing violin, and traveling. | |
Abrar Awadeh is majoring in Biology and minoring in Literature. She plans on applying to medical school after graduating and is interested in Pediatrics and Oncology. She has always been interested in conservation biology as well as the environmental impacts on human health both physically and mentally. Lilith Janevska is currently studying Mathematical Sciences and Biology, with minors in Chemistry and Environmental Science & Policy. Lilian Azab is majoring in Biology with a minor in Psychology. Her passion for caring for the planet and love for nature has fueled her interest in learning more about conservation biology and promoting the critical connection between environmental health and societal well-being. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, cooking, and swimming. | |
Sevda Selman is majoring in Forensic Science with a minor in Legal Studies. She plans to pursue a career in crime scene investigation. She has always been interested in ecology, zoology, and avian biology — specifically parrots — and she hopes to learn more about environmental sustainability to work towards nurturing our planet. She spends her free time playing with her two pet green cheek conures, birdwatching, playing video games and listening to alternative music. | |
Ky Havers is majoring in Architecture with a minor in Environmental Sciences and Sustainability. He is particularly interested in finding ways in which human development can coexist with native ecosystems. He likes to spend what little time he has outside of coursework reading, drawing comic book art, listening to heavy music, and playing Dungeons and Dragons. | |
Vita Infurna is pursing a degree in Biology with a minor in Applied Mathematics. She wishes to do research pertaining to ecology, environmental sustainability, and animal behaviors. In her free time, she enjoys playing video games, painting, drawing, and journaling. | |
Aum Davé is an environmental science major with a strong interest in conducting chemical and biological analyses on waterbodies to assess the health of aquatic ecosystems. He is a stream monitoring volunteer with the Watershed Institute, where he assesses dissolved oxygen (DO) and pH levels in waterbodies to evaluate aquatic health. He is also focused on addressing air pollution through natural climate solutions, aiming to reduce acid rain, which is exacerbated by greenhouse gases such as NOx and CO2. Passionate about wildlife, he is dedicated to restoring species populations to stabilize biogeochemical cycles that impact both nutrition and the quality of air and water. In his free time, Aum enjoys hiking, swimming, wildlife photography, watching TV, creative writing, and studying his greatest passion. |
Casandra Auletta graduated in 2023 with degrees in Forensic Science and Biochemistry. They are looking to apply to Medical Schools to pursue a career in forensic pathology. Hopefully, along the way, they can get experience in a Medical Examiner’s office as a technician before the end of grad school. | |
Grace Bambilla's apprenticeship at Grow it Green Morristown's Urban Farm made her fall in love with working closely with non-profits and communities. She graduated in 2023 with a degree in Environmental Science and hopes she can pursue a job involving urban agriculture, research for a non-profit, or field research. She enjoys taking walks, hanging out with her cat, and hopes to start a community garden in her hometown. | |
Elza Dedelli graduated in 2023 with a degree in biochemistry. She plans to pursue a graduate degree in biology and do ecological research as a career. She loves cats, likes hiking, and wants to travel the world someday. | |
Genifa Edwards obtained her bachelors of science in biology. She has always been interested in family history and how genetics and the environment plays an important part in our everyday lives. After graduation, she plans on getting her masters in genetic counseling to become a genetic counselor. In her free time, she enjoys dancing and listening to music. | |
Rachel Deahl is now a Masters student in Biology with in interest in computation and data science. As an undergraduate she studied Biology with a Concentration in Ecology and Evolution and a minor in Environmental Studies and Sustainability. She is interested in a research career where she can spend a lot of time in the field and hopes to make an impact on the scientific world. Daniella Delgado is obtaining her degree in Biochemistry. She is interested in the chemical principles of biological processes and wants to study how they contribute to everyday issues, whether medically or environmentally related. She plans on gaining experience in environmental research to contribute to urban ecology projects and to develop career skills. | |
Kathryn Wulf is working towards a degree in Biochemistry. She plans on pursuing a graduate degree and is interested in a research career where she can study the effects of pollution on environmental processes at the chemical level. She enjoys crocheting and baking in her free time. | |
Anika Barnes is pursuing a Bachelors of Science in Biology with a minor in Applied Mathematics. They are working towards a career in dentistry. They love nature and art and are passionate about sustainability and environmental initiatives. They hope to use their skills and experience to better the world one step at a time. |
Lab Directors
Gareth Russell (Co-Director)
Dr. Gareth Russell is an Associate Professor of Ecology and Conservation Biology. Growing up in the UK, he obtained his undergraduate degree at Oxford University and then moved to the US to pursue his PhD at the University of Tennessee. After post-doctoral research positions in Tennessee and California, he lectured at Columbia University before joining NJIT in 2005. Dr. Russell studies spatial ecology, with a current emphasis on interpreting animal movement data. He is also interested in applying new technology, such as machine learning, to improve our understanding and stewardship of the natural world. His lab website is www.structuralecology.net.
Daniel Bunker (Co-Director)
Dr. Daniel Bunker is an Associate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. He earned his BS at The Evergreen State College in Olympia Washington and his PhD at the University of Pittsburgh. He was a Post-Doctoral Research Scientist at Columbia University before joining NJIT in 2008. Dr. Bunker studies community ecology and evolutionary biology with an emphasis on global change, plant-animal interactions, urban ecology and evolution. Dr. Bunker also has a longstanding interest in ecoinformatics.
Maria Stanko (Co-Director)
Dr. Maria Stanko is a community ecologist and Senior University Lecturer in the Dept. of Biological Sciences at NJIT. She earned her undergraduate degree in Biology from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, ME and completed her PhD at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ. In 2010, she joined NJIT where her primary role is in curriculum development and undergraduate teaching. Dr. Stanko’s research examines the role of species interactions, especially between flowering plants and pollinators, in biodiversity maintenance and investigates the community-wide consequences of the disruption of these interactions through loss of biodiversity, species invasion, and global change. Her teaching and research interests also include scientific teaching, urban agriculture, and invertebrate conservation.
Caroline DeVan (Co-Director)
Dr. Caroline DeVan is a University Lecturer at NJIT. She received her B.A. from University of Tennessee, Knoxville where she began her career in ecology and climate change research working first as an undergraduate researcher and then as a technician at the Free-Air Carbon Enrichment (FACE) project at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, TN. After working in a variety of labs across the United States and doing field research in far-flung locales such as the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico; Barro Colorado Island, Panama; and Palmer Station, Antarctica, she began her Ph.D. at NJIT under the supervision of Dr. Daniel Bunker. Caroline’s dissertation research focused on plant-pollinator relationships and the ecology of the recently introduced cavity-nesting bees, Osmia cornifrons and O. taurus in New Jersey. She was hired as a full-time instructor at NJIT in Fall 2016 where she now teaches Concepts of Biology with Dr. Maria Stanko, Foundations in Ecology and Evolution, and Animal Behavior. Her courses incorporate inclusive and innovative teaching practices that seek to prepare the next generation of biologists and environmental science professionals to meet a range of future challenges by providing them with first-hand experiences in scientific research.
