Undergraduate course involving material selection, important properties of materials for use in the body and how the body interacts/ reacts with these materials. Students learn design criteria for different biomaterial applications in orthopedic, cardiovascular, occular, drug delivery, imaging and other relevant settings.
BME 698 (ST): Biointerfaces and Drug Delivery
Graduate/Senior Undergraduate course, serving as an introduction to the interfacial dynamics of micro- and nanoparticle based drug delivery systems. Students learn about 1) Intermolecular forces experienced by particles that affect their stability and efficacy in a physiological environment, 2) Design, bioconjugation, and targeting of particles used in drug delivery, including, liposomes, polymersomes, and protein and lipid nanoparticles, and 3) Challenges and opportunities presented by the protein corona and biological barriers that particles face while reaching their target.
