NCI Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award to Promote Diversity (K08 - Independent Clinical Trial Not Allowed)
Funding Agency:
- National Institutes of Health
The purpose of the NCI Mentored Clinical Scientist Research Career Development Award to Promote Diversity (K08) program is to enhance the pool of qualified individuals for careers that have a significant impact on the health-related research needs of the Nation. This program represents the continuation of a long-standing NIH program that provides support and protected time to individuals with a clinical doctoral degree or a health professional doctoral degree for an intensive, supervised research career development experience in the fields of basic biomedical, clinical, behavioral, translational, or patient-oriented (POR) cancer research, including research on cancer health disparities. This NCI-sponsored K08 award is specifically designed to enhance the diversity in the NCI-funded cancer research workforce by supporting eligible scientists from diverse backgrounds, including groups that have been shown to be nationally underrepresented in health-related sciences.
The research criteria for the K08 award include POR which is defined as research conducted with human subjects (or on material of human origin such as tissues, specimens and cognitive phenomena) for which an investigator (or colleague) directly interacts with human subjects. This area of research includes: 1) mechanisms of human disease; 2) therapeutic interventions; 3) clinical trials; 4) the development of new technologies.
Award budgets are composed of salary and other program-related expenses.
