The vision of the SCIRP is to advance the treatment and management of SCI and ameliorate its consequences relevant to injured Service Members. The FY22 SCIRP challenges the scientific community to design research that will advance the development or translation of healthcare solutions for people living with SCI. Innovative research that fosters new directions or addresses neglected issues in the field of traumatic SCI is also supported, although studies focused exclusively on target identification are discouraged. The SCIRP encourages impactful research across the continuum of care from time-of-injury throughout life that is well reasoned and scientifically supported. Applications from investigators within the military Services and applications involving multidisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, the military Services, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and other federal government agencies are highly encouraged.
Applications to the FY22 SCIRP Translational Research Award (TRA) must address at least one of the Focus Areas listed below. Applications may address more than one Focus Area. In particular, applications combining biomarker studies with studies in one or more of the other Focus Areas are encouraged. Applications using clinically relevant combinations of interventions within or across Focus Areas are also encouraged. The FY22 SCIRP Focus Areas are:
Preserving and protecting spinal cord tissue at time of injury for improved neurologic outcomes
Identifying and validating biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and for evaluation of treatment efficacies
Developing, testing, and validating promising interventions to address bowel, genitourinary, neuropathic pain, cardiopulmonary, or autonomic dysfunction in people with SCI
Investigating psychosocial issues relevant to people with SCI, their families, and/or their care-partners
Rehabilitation and regeneration—maximizing the function of the residual neural circuitry, including harnessing neuroplasticity and recovery to improve function after SCI
Awards:
The anticipated direct costs budgeted for the entire period of performance for an FY22 SCIRP Translational Research Award will not exceed $1,250,000 or $1,350,000 for the Early-Career Partnering PI option.
