Welcome
Welcome to Introductory Physics Laboratory!
Our lab courses provide undergraduate students with hands-on experience in physics. Students will perform experiments, collect and analyze data, and write reports to better understand the theories taught in their physics classes.
What to Expect
All lab courses (PHYS 102A, 103A, 111A, 202A, 203A, and 231A) are held on the fourth floor of Tiernan Hall, rooms 406 through 409. Each class is approximately two hours long.
Students will work in groups of about four to complete 13 experiments throughout the semester. They will then submit an individual lab report to their instructor one week after each experiment.
What Students Need
Before the first class, students can purchase the required lab manual from the NJIT Bookstore. They will also need to bring a calculator, a pencil, and a USB flash drive to each lab session. It is highly recommended that students read the lab manual before attending class to prepare for the day's experiment.
On the first day of class, the instructor will review the semester schedule, grading policies, safety guidelines, and lab report requirements.
Grading and Attendance
A student's final grade (A through F) is based on attendance, participation, and lab reports. There are no exams in these lab courses.
Please note: Students are very likely to fail the course if they miss at least three lab experiments without a valid excuse. All lab reports must be a student's own work; copying from a partner or other sources is not permitted.
Make-up Policy
If a student needs to miss a lab for a valid reason, they may be able to attend a different section of the same lab course as a make-up. The student must contact both their lab TA and a physics lab staff member to get approval.
In cases of serious illness or other unavoidable circumstances, students must provide appropriate documentation to the Dean of Students Office.
