Please RSVP using this link by November 7 to register the workshop and showcase.
Recent technological and pharmaceutical advances in healthcare have yielded tremendous improvements in the diagnosis and treatment of deadly maladies, from cancers to infectious diseases. Yet a critical problem remains: Too few people, and particularly those in under-resourced communities in both impoverished and affluent nations, have access to the life-changing remedies many of us take for granted. These disparities are unsustainable in a functioning global society.
What we need are affordable, simpler and more effective healthcare technologies that can be administered easily in a wide range of settings. This is not merely a research and development challenge that is solved by ingenious inventors, but one of market validation and translation as well. These devices must win the acceptance of users, clinicians, payors and regulatory agencies. Partnerships among academic researchers, healthcare providers, regulators and businesspeople that enable them to pool ideas, expertise, resources and investments will speed the commercialization of new personalized, preventive and precision healthcare applications. In keynote and panel discussions at the fall NAI-NJIT workshop, leaders from each of these key stakeholder groups will discuss potential pathways to success.
Also, please join us at the 2023 NJIT Faculty Research Showcase this afternoon to learn about exciting new research projects from our new faculty, recipients of NJIT’s Technology Innovation Translation and Acceleration seed grants and researchers from other New Jersey universities. The workshop and showcase will be held in-person in Ballroom A at the Student Campus Center. Light lunch will be served. All faculty, staff and students are invited to attend.

NSF I-Corps Hub Northeast Region Research Grants
https://icorpsnortheasthub.org/engage/apply-research-grants
Deadline: December 8, 2023 at 11:59 pm
The NSF I-Corps Hub Northeast Region is pleased to announce support for research on technology innovation, commercialization and entrepreneurship. Small (up to $5000) research grants are available on a competitive basis to researchers interested in conducting research projects in collaboration with the NSF I-Corps Hub Northeast Region. We are interested in research that will result in academic publication and projects that advance practice in meaningful ways. We are particularly interested in research proposals in two areas: 1) inclusive innovation and 2) deep tech ventures founding. For more information, click here.
NSF: Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers (ITEST) Resource Center; Capacity Building to Catalyze Collaborations to Address Climate Change Impacts on Human Health (C2H2); Aligning Fundamental Research and Education in Advanced Manufacturing with the Objectives of the Manufacturing USA Institutes; Cognitive Neuroscience (CogNeuro); Ethical and Responsible Research (ER2)
NIH: Research Centers in Minority Institutions (RCMI) (U54); National Institute of General Medical Sciences Predoctoral Basic Biomedical Sciences Research Training Program (T32)
Department of Defense/US Army/DARPA/ONR: Information Innovation Office (I2O) Office-wide; Intrinsic Cognitive Security (ICS); Defense Sciences Office (DSO) Office-wide BAA
Department of Commerce/EDA: FY 2023 Regional Technology and Innovation Hub Program Phase 2 Notice of Funding Opportunity; Climate Program Office FY2024

31 communities tapped as innovation hub finalists: In a move aimed at expanding the tech sector’s economic development engine to more parts of the country, the Biden administration on Monday named 31 communities as innovation hubs that will work to advance a range of technologies, including autonomous systems, quantum computing, biomedicine and green energy. With tens of millions in federal funding, the selected consortiums—made up of state and local governments, educational institutions, businesses and community groups in 32 states and Puerto Rico—now have an opportunity to turn themselves into global players in advanced technology.
The funding for the hubs comes from last year’s $54.2 billion CHIPS Act. Most of that capital went toward subsidies to encourage companies to increase the production of U.S.-manufactured semiconductors. The legislation also called for spending $10 billion to create 20 Regional Innovation and Technology Hubs over the next five years that would research, develop and commercialize a wide range of advanced technologies. The 31 proposals will compete in the coming years to be named one of hubs.
However, because Congress has only approved spending the first $500 million of the money, only a few of the innovation hub proposals are sure to get funding in the next year. Under a Notice of Funding Opportunity also released by the Commerce Department’s Economic Development Administration on Monday, the projects, which were selected out of 192 applications to be designated as a hub, will now compete in a second phase for the funds. Only five to 10 of the projects will get $40 million to $70 million to implement their plans. More information is posted on the NextGov website.

NIST plans new risk evaluation methods and standards tracking for AI: The National Institute of Standards and Technology is adding new features in its roster of tools to help standardize artificial intelligence technologies in the agency’s ongoing effort to promote the construction of responsible AI systems. Elham Tabassi, the associate director for emerging technology at NIST, testified before the House Science, Space and Technology Committee on Wednesday, saying that her office is working to build upon its existing AI guidance offerings with new evaluation methods and a standards tracking system. These new evaluation efforts will primarily look at the socio-technical aspects of AI systems to determine whether they are safe enough for deployment. Question: Can I generate budgets for multiple years from the Year-1 budget in Streamlyne?
Answer: Yes! You only need to input the Year-1 budget and then click on the “generate all periods” button. Stremalyne will create budget sheets for the remaining periods. You can then go to “summary” under the budget tab to review budget sheets for all periods. You can also change specific budget items that you allocated in Year-1 but you do not want to continue them in the following periods.
