NSF Research Experience and Mentoring (REM) Supplement Support to NSF Grants Awardees
The National Science Foundation Directorate for Engineering (NSF/ENG) continually seeks to advance scientific progress in research and innovation while broadening participation of underrepresented groups in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields. If you currently have an active NSF grant, please contact your program director for supplemental funding for additional support for having undergraduate and high-school students in your lab on the funded project(s). The REM Program supports the active involvement of research participants (high school students, STEM teachers, undergraduate STEM students, faculty, and veterans) in hands-on research to bring participants into collaboration with suitable STEM mentors and expose them to this rich research experience. Research participants will be recruited as cohorts to facilitate mentoring and research activities, community building, and provide mutual support. The program directors in different NSF directorate may have discretionary funds for supplement grants to active research grants. They will advise you on the application protocol for supplement grants.

President’s Science and Technology Council: Highlighting a historic level of diversity, White House officials released the names of 30 individuals from industry and academia who will advise the president on science and technology issues. “The members represent the most diverse [Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology] in U.S. history,” according to a White House announcement Wednesday. “This PCAST reflects the president’s commitment to build an administration that truly looks like America: For the first time ever, women make up half of PCAST, and people of color and immigrants make up more than one-third of PCAST.” The new council “include[s] experts in astrophysics and agriculture, biochemistry and computer engineering, ecology and entrepreneurship, immunology and nanotechnology, neuroscience and national security, social science and cybersecurity, and more,” the White House release said. The council will be co-chaired by Director of White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Eric Lander, and—for the first time—two women. One, Frances Arnold, is a biochemical engineer who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry and started companies working on agriculture and sustainable fuels. The other, Maria Zuber, is a trailblazer for women in geophysics and planetary science with experience leading experiments on missions at NASA. More information is posted on the NextGov website.

10 Universities Picked to Help HHS Build Up Health IT Workforce: The Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT announced $73 million in grants to support career training and job placement for 4,000 new health IT workers. The funding is part of $80 million given to HHS as part of the second pandemic stimulus package—the American Rescue Plan—set aside for the Public Health Informatics and Technology Workforce Development Program, or PHIT. The program is being administered by the Office of the National Coordinator for Health IT, or ONC, which Wednesday announced 10 awards focused on bringing more minority and underserved communities into health IT. ONC officials initially planned to award up to $75 million—with $5 million reserved for program administration—for up to 30 projects. After three months of sifting through project proposals, the team chose 10 awardees:
- Bowie State University, Bowie, MD
- California State University, Long Beach Research Foundation, Long Beach, CA
- Dominican College of Blauvelt, Inc., Orangeburg, NY
- Jackson State University, Jackson, MS
- Norfolk State University, Norfolk, VA
- Regents of The University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN
- The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, Houston, TX
- University of Massachusetts at Lowell, Lowell, MA
- University of California, Irvine, Irvine, CA
- University of the District of Columbia, Washington, DC
The organizations will group to “form multiple consortia” that will provide training and job placement assistance for more than 4,000 people over the next four years.
