Appointment of Dr. Shawn Chester as the Interim Associate Vice Provost for Research Collaboration and Partnerships
Dr. Shawn Chester has joined the Office of Research as the Interim Associate Vice Provost for Research Collaboration and Partnerships.
Dr. Shawn Chester is Associate Professor in Mechanical Engineering at NJIT. Shawn was previously a postdoctoral researcher at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. He obtained his PhD from MIT in solid mechanics, and both BS and MS in Mechanical Engineering from NJIT. Shawn's research focus includes the development of experimentally validated continuum level constitutive theories for large-deformation multiphysics behavior of polymeric materials and the associated numerical implementation. His work spans most aspects of mechanics; experimental characterization, theoretical modeling, numerical implementation, and experimental validation. Shawn has been recognized and honored by several young investigator awards including the ASME AMD Thomas J.R. Hughes Award, an NSF CAREER, and the ASME AMD Haythronthwaite award.
In this position, Shawn will focus on enhancing research collaboration and partnerships and bringing investigators together to conceptualize and develop large-scale, multidisciplinary research initiatives and translate them into compelling funding opportunities; experience building cohesive, high performing teams. TITA Seed Grant Program Objective
The NJIT Technology Innovation Translation and Acceleration (TITA) Seed Grant program will enable faculty and students to successfully accelerate the translation of their innovation to enterprise development and business incubation. The TITA grant program will foster entrepreneurial pathways from research and innovation to business and value creation with the acquisition of intellectual property, market validation, and engagement of stakeholders towards commercialization. The TITA Seed Grants will increase awareness of the potential commercial benefits at earlier stages of the translation and market validation process and allow researchers and stakeholders to collaborate for entrepreneurial success. It will also help faculty to submit competitive translational research proposals to external grant funding opportunities.
Eligibility
NJIT faculty members pursuing research addressing a significant unmet market need with an innovative potential solution of high impact are encouraged to apply for TITA seed grants. The following requirements must be met at the time of the initial Concept Paper submission (please see the Call for Proposal for complete information):
- Proof of concept of research and innovation of high significance has been demonstrated in laboratory settings with the ongoing research work.
- A provisional or non-provisional patent application is filed by NJIT or a patent has been awarded to NJIT on the proposed technology.

HHS Privacy Official Doubles Down on Data Protection: The Office of Civil Rights within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is working alongside doctors, insurance agencies and other covered providers to strengthen patient privacy in the aftermath of the overturning of Roe v. Wade. Speaking with Nextgov, OCR Director Melanie Fontes Rainer discussed the agency’s ongoing work to ensure reproductive health data is protected, as concerns mount over that data potentially being used by law enforcement to prosecute individuals seeking an abortion. Reiterating HHS Secretary Xavier Bercerra’s earlier comments following the new abortion ruling, Fontes Rainer said that “all options are on the table” surrounding how the federal government aims to protect patient data privacy. US Must Proactively Participate in International AI Standards-Setting, Officials Warn: A House hearing on Thursday examined the steps needed to ensure continued U.S. leadership and trust in artificial intelligence systems, as the technologies become more ubiquitous in everyday devices. Speaking before the House Science, Space and Technology Subcommittee on Research and Technology, several witnesses—including sitting government officials—discussed how to promote trust and reduce bias in AI systems that handle sensitive human data. Elham Tabassi, the lead at the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s Trustworthy and Responsible AI Program, testified about the agency’s forthcoming AI Risk Management Framework as part of its socio-technical approach to helping industry and government entities use and navigate AI safely. ARPA-H: High-risk, High-reward Health Research is the Mandate of New, Billion-dollar US Agency: A new multibillion-dollar federal agency was created with a goal of supporting “the next generation of moonshots for health” in science, logistics, diversity and equality. And the agency now has it’s first leader, as President Joe Biden announced Renee Wegrzyn as director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health, or ARPA-H, on Sept. 12, 2022. Since the announcement of the intention to establish ARPA-H two years ago, this new agency has sparked interest and questions within both academia and industry. I have been a director of innovation-driven health institutes for decades and have worked with many of the government agencies that fund science. I and many of my colleagues hope ARPA-H will become an agency that can quickly turn scientific discoveries into real-world advances to detect, prevent and treat diseases like cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer’s. But questions still remain surrounding how it will work and what makes it different from other government-funded agencies such as the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. Question: Can I generate budgets for multiple years from the Year-1 budget in Streamlyne?
Answer: Yes! You only need to input the Year-1 budget and then click on the “generate all periods” button. Stremalyne will create budget sheets for the remaining periods. You can then go to “summary” under the budget tab to review budget sheets for all periods. You can also change specific budget items that you allocated in Year-1 but you do not want to continue them in the following periods.
