BARDA Accelerator Network Opportunity
BARDA is actively seeking proposals for the BARDA Acceleration Network 2.0!
The Accelerator Network connects BARDA to thirteen accelerators across the U.S. in regions where there is heavy activity in developing health security products and technologies in biotechnology, life science research, and medical innovations. The network supports early-stage companies throughout their journey – from identifying a need to product launch – to help them overcome their biggest business, marketing, and operational hurdles, and achieve success sooner. These partnerships provide BARDA with critical insights and direct connections to our nation’s innovators, through which the development of groundbreaking technology to improve our nation’s health security would not be possible. Department of Energy Announces $29 Million for Research on Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Resources for Fusion Energy Sciences: the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced $29 million in funding for seven team awards for research in machine learning, artificial intelligence, and data resources for fusion energy sciences. Nineteen institutions will apply advanced and autonomous algorithms to address high-priority research opportunities in fusion and plasma sciences. The teams include fusion and plasma researchers working in partnership with data and computational scientists through the establishment of multi-institutional, interdisciplinary collaborations. The recipients will pursue research in science discovery, diagnostic data analysis, model extraction and reduction, plasma control, analysis of extreme-scale simulation data, and data-enhanced prediction. Multiple awards will focus on establishing new systems for managing, formatting, curating, and accessing experimental and simulation data with research products to be provided in publicly available databases. The projects were selected by competitive peer review under the DOE Funding Opportunity Announcement for Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, and Data Resources for Fusion Energy Sciences. Total funding is $29 million for projects lasting up to three years in duration, with $11 million in Fiscal Year 2023 dollars and outyear funding contingent on congressional appropriations. The list of projects and more information can be found on the FES program homepage.

Emerging tech is an SBA priority for both internal systems and external assistance: Leadership at the Small Business Administration is ready to modernize its agency operations with upgraded technology, with the help of both Congress and private sector partners to improve the digital infrastructure within small businesses in the U.S. Speaking during a discussion with the Bipartisan Policy Center, Bailey DeVries, associate administrator for the Small Business Administration's Office of Investment and Innovation, shed light on her agency’s efforts to incorporate more emerging systems into its work. “The technology innovation cycle only seems to speed up, which is exciting, but it also presents risks and considerations,” she said. “And with that, it requires the need to have good governance, good support with technology systems and to be able to procure technologies that we need to effectively meet the needs of small businesses, and also to not introduce security risks.” More information is posted on the NextGov website.

Energy continues funding expansion into quantum computing research: The Department of Energy is continuing its investments into quantum information sciences research and development, with another $24 million allocated toward three projects focused on quantum network research. Each of these three projects — developed between U.S. national laboratories and universities — intend to contribute to the growing pool of quantum computing research as the global race to develop a scalable, fault-tolerant quantum computer heats up. The funding recipients include researchers collaborating between the Argonne National Laboratory and Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, along with Illinois schools like Northwestern University, the University of Chicago and the University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign, whose team will focus on codesigning scalable quantum networks. Question: Can I generate budgets for multiple years from the Year-1 budget in Streamlyne?
Answer: Yes! You only need to input the Year-1 budget and then click on the “generate all periods” button. Stremalyne will create budget sheets for the remaining periods. You can then go to “summary” under the budget tab to review budget sheets for all periods. You can also change specific budget items that you allocated in Year-1 but you do not want to continue them in the following periods.
