BII Science Prize for Innovation
Behind every life-changing solution is an entrepreneurial scientist – a creative mind who proved an idea in the lab and dared to carry it out in the world. To encourage more scientists to translate their research, BioInnovation Institute (BII) and Science collaborate to host an annual award. Through the BioInnovation Institute & Science Prize for Innovation, the editors of Science seek to recognize bold researchers who are asking fundamental questions at the intersection of the life sciences and entrepreneurship.
Our three winners will have their essays published in Science and will be invited into BII’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. In addition, the Grand Prize winner will receive a prize of USD 25,000 and each runner-up will receive USD 10,000 at a grand award ceremony in Copenhagen, Denmark.
The deadline for applying is November 1. Click the apply button to read more about how to submit a 1000-word essay to the editors at Science.

Microsoft and Pacific Northwest National Laboratory bring AI to quantum chemistry research: Microsoft and the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory are banking on artificial intelligence and high-performance computing’s potential to advance research breakthroughs in chemistry and materials science, unveiling an updated software suite for widespread access across scientific communities. The new offering, a series of software tools moved onto Microsoft’s Azure Quantum Elements cloud computing platform, is specifically engineered to provide high-performance AI tools for chemistry and materials sciences researchers. “Our focus with PNNL is taking the AI capabilities that already exist on the platform and augmenting them with best in class tools for doing scientific discovery using physics based methods on chemistry problems,” Nathan Baker, an Azure Quantum product lead at Microsoft, told Nextgov/FCW. Success of the AI national security memo ‘will be in the implementation,’ industry says: Following yesterday’s release of the Biden administration’s first artificial intelligence-centric national security memorandum, technology policy analysts and advocates are paying close attention to the efficacy of the memo’s implementation. As the memo directs a series of actions for the federal government to execute that will contribute to securing U.S. leadership in AI innovation –– including supply chain security, forming a new specialized coordination group and streamlining visa processes for applicants with STEM backgrounds –– policy experts are pushing for firm oversight into these actions’ deployments.
