Research
Our research topics and projects.
Current Federally Funded Research Projects:
Oculomotor Rehabilitation in Veterans with mTBI: The aim of this study is to implement and test the effectiveness of an automated convergence insufficiency rehabilitation device in Veterans with a mild traumatic brain injury and convergence insufficiency. (Funded by the DoD: W81XWH-22-C-0146, Project led by SQRLab)
Pediatric Concussion Vision Rehabilitation: This study aims to examine the effectiveness of office-based vergence and accommodative therapy (OBVAT) in remediating convergence insufficiency (CI) in children with CI acquired as a result of a concussion. (Funded by the NIH: R01EY023261, Project led by Dr. Tara Alvarez of NJIT)
Other Ongoing Research Projects:
Multimodal Visual Balance Concussion Assessment: The purpose of this study is to understand the underlying interconnectivity between the visual, oculomotor, and balance systems in non-concussed healthy controls and the deficits present in concussed participants.
MoVES Automation: This project aims to automate the Oculomotor and Vestibular Endurance Screening (MoVES) protocol in a virtual reality headset so it can easily be utilized without any training.
Portable Balance Measurement Device. This project aims to utilize a Wii Balance Board and design a software package that can be used on the sidelines for quantifying the balance system before and after a concussion.
Foot Tapping as a Concussion Metric. This project aims to understand the effects on the musculoskeletal system after a concussion or a traumatic brain injury.
Clinical Assessments Developed at SQRLab:
VisQuaL-T: The Vision Quality of Life with Time survey is a quality of life survey that can aid in assessing an individual's visual difficulties in day-to-day life

Legacy Projects:
Veteran Rehabilitation Post-TBI: The goal of this work is to identify whether high-definition transcranial direct current can amplify the rehabilitation process in veterans suffering from TBI symptoms. (Funded by the DoD: W81XWH-17-1-0432, Project led by Dr. Davin Quinn of the University of New Mexico)
Rapid Sideline Concussion Diagnostics: The aim of this study is to test the reliability and efficacy of the Oculomotor and Vestibular Endurance Screening (MoVES) protocol in detecting concussions.
Modular Crutch Augmentation: This capstone project aims to design a modular device that can be attached to temporary or long-term crutches to enable users to traverse orthogonal slopes.
