The projects supported by this initiative seek to stimulate multi-level research (see NIMHD Research Framework) to understand and mitigate the harmful impacts of misinformationand disinformation among populations that experience health disparities and to inform public health practice. This initiative frames misinformation and disinformation as public health threats and calls for multidisciplinary and multi-level research with a health disparities lens that recognizes the role of psychosocial and cultural factors, structural racism, distrust, and marginalization of communities. In addition, the influence of resilience or factors that impact the uptake of accurate health information is of interest. Examples include COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, STIs, vaccines, genetic testing, cancer, and tobacco use and cessation, among others. Outcomes of interest include physical and mental health, health decision-making, behavior change, adherence to evidence-based prevention and treatment guidelines/recommendations, and morbidity and mortality.
Projects should include a focus on examining how misinformation and disinformation operate within one or more NIH designated populations that experience health disparities in the US and US Territories (Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, American Indian and Alaska Native, Asian, or Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander persons, socioeconomically disadvantaged populations, underserved rural populations, and sexual and gender minority (SGM) groups). Studies supported under this FOA are encouraged to work closely with key informants and partners with particular insights on the potential impacts of misinformation and disinformation within and across communities, such as community members and leaders, community-based organizations, health care, local or state government agencies, public health departments, and other relevant stakeholders where appropriate.
