NJ Brownfields Assistance Center @ NJIT is awarded the Commerce and Industry Association of NJ’s Environmental Leadership Award
The Commerce and Industry Association of NJ (CIANJ) has given its Environmental Leadership Award to the NJ Brownfields Assistance Center @ NJIT for its dedication to “Cleaning up Communities and Environmental Education”. The NJ Brownfields Assistance Center @ NJIT (a center housed within the Center for Community Systems) is the first-of-its-kind and only center solely focused on assisting NJ communities in overcoming their brownfield challenges. NJIT Selected as EPA Region 2 Technical Assistance to Brownfields Communities Provider
NJIT has been chosen by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to provide training and technical assistance to communities in EPA Region 2, which comprises New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, under the Technical Assistance to Brownfields (TAB) Program. The NJ Brownfields Assistance Center @NJIT Receives NJEDA Grant
For a second consecutive year, NJIT has received a grant from the NJ Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) that supports the NJ Brownfields Assistance Center @NJIT. (This center is housed within the university’s Center for Community Systems.) NJEDA’s grant helps further the NJ Brownfields Assistance Center @NJIT’s mission to provide free technical assistance to all NJ county and municipal governments and nonprofits interested in having former industrial and commercial properties rid of contamination and redeveloped into community assets. www.njit.edu/njbrownfields

The Center for Community Systems Receives Prudential Foundation Grant
The Center for Community Systems received a grant from the Prudential Foundation in October 2020 to continue its Newark Airport City – focused work. This is the third grant that Executive Director Colette Santasieri and Professor Darius Sollohub have received from the Prudential Foundation and will allow the Newark Airport City team to continue its mission of promoting for the long-term economic, social, and environmental sustainability surrounding a newly catalyzed Newark Liberty International Airport. An international online conference is planned for the Spring of 2021.
Roadmap to Mill Redevelopment Webinar Series
The NJIT Technical Assistance to Brownfield Communities Program (TAB), a function of the Center for Community Systems designed and held a four part webinar series focused on the redevelopment of New England’s iconic mills. The series featured many re-purposed New England mills along with experts delving into the trials and triumphs of mill redevelopment. The webinar’s topics included: the history of New England’s mills, planning for redevelopment, challenges and solutions to redevelopment, the funding stack, and adapting to change. The NJ Brownfields Assistance Center @ NJIT conducts an Environmental Justice Virtual Roundtable Discussion
The NJ Brownfields Assistance Center @ NJIT, a function of the Center for Community Systems recently conducted an important and timely virtual roundtable discussion focused on how redeveloped former commercial and industrial sites can be a path towards environmental and social justice. The webinar featured NJDEP's Deputy Commissioner Olivia Glenn who discusses New Jersey's recently passed landmark environmental justice legislation. A round table discussion with Passaic Mayor Hector Lora and Trenton Mayor W. Reed Gusciora followed, focusing on how communities have long suffered the negative impacts of contaminated, industrial and commercial properties, and how transformation of those properties can create local opportunities for social equity and environmental justice.
