New Jersey Brownfields Assistance Center @ NJIT
The NJ Brownfields Assistance Center @ NJIT is the first-of-its-kind center that solely focuses on and serves New Jersey’s communities as they strive to transform their former industrial and commercial properties into community assets. This Center educates and engages communities about brownfield issues. It provides free “help desk” assistance and guidance to any NJ county or municipal government challenged with navigating the cleanup and redevelopment processes, and it develops tools and resources for both the public and private sector, including developers, consultants, and other brownfield practitioners.
Technical Assistance to Brownfields Communities Program (NJIT TAB)
Since 2008, NJIT has served as a US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) provider of technical assistance to brownfields communities. The NJIT TAB Program has provided free technical assistance to hundreds of state, regional, county, tribal, and local governments and nonprofits in 21 states, two US territories, Washington DC, and 31 tribal nations. NJIT TAB’s subject matter experts provide technical assistance to communities, helping them overcome challenges posed by brownfields, and advance their properties toward redevelopment. NJIT TAB creates and conducts educational and stakeholder engagement forums (e.g., boot camps, workshops, webinars, seminars). These help foster a community’s understanding of technical, scientific, and regulatory issues, funding opportunities, economic development, and social equity issues. NJIT TAB creates tools, resources, guidance, and strategies. These enhance community knowledge, build capacity, and empower communities.

Who are we?
We are an organization dedicated to promoting Environmental and Energy Justice, focusing on the development of leadership skills. What do we do?
We support community-based non-profit organizations, municipalities, educational institutions, and religious institutions, among others, in finding solutions to environmental and energy challenges. The Hub for Creative Placemaking
Located in the Martin Tuchman School of Management’s New Jersey Innovation Acceleration Center, the Hub for Creative Placemaking serves as both a professional training center and a collaborative platform for NJIT faculty, staff, and students to partner with arts organizations, local artists, community planners, civic leaders, philanthropists, and others interested in leveraging the arts to help shape and revitalize physical public spaces, as well as the social and economic well-being of local communities.
The five pillars of the Hub are: research, technical assistance, professional training, curriculum development, and resource center. While located in the School of Management, this is a true cross-university coloration as the Hub’s three leaders represent three colleges in NJIT (MT SOM, CSLA, and HCAD). The Center for Community System’s Dr. Colette Santasieri serves as the Hub’s Co-Principal Investigator -Technical Assistance, and Co-Lead Instructor, Curriculum.
