Health Technology in Action: One of the rare positives of the COVID-19 pandemic is how it accelerated U.S. government-led research and drove agencies to adopt new digital and health technologies. Since medical facilities and hospitals were overwhelmed with large surges in COVID-19 patients, supply chains were initially bottlenecked, and people were directed to stay home at the start of 2020, federal officials have rapidly implemented tools and policies to cope with new demands and manufactured needed resources on their own grounds. The government also tapped emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and robots to confront the major modern challenges presented by the novel coronavirus. NASA’s Planning a New Initiative to Train People How to Make Use of Its Space Data: America’s space agency captures massive volumes of data from remote platforms each day—and with plans to launch a couple of new satellites in 2022, its information collection will likely soon be expanding at about 50 petabytes per year. Over the last 18 to 24 months, according to the chief science data officer within its science mission directorate, NASA recognized a need to broaden the diversity of people who can answer local questions via this global data it gathers. A workshop associated with this work, which is ultimately aimed at helping jumpstart the adoption of “open science” across NASA-related communities, is set for next month. The agency has also been implementing DevOps approaches for a while now, Murphy noted. That’s proving useful in this context as it helps accelerate the movement of data in cloud environments and the compilation of diverse datasets, so scientists can gain more of a holistic systems perspective. Grants Management Shared Services Marketplace Set to Launch by End of 2021: The office in charge of building a governmentwide shared services ecosystem for grants management plans to launch a new website and marketplace by the end of 2021 and have all federal service providers onboarded by mid-year. The Quality Service Management Office, or QSMO, idea launched in April 2019 with the goal of creating four shared services centers around key needs for all federal agencies: grants management, cybersecurity, human resources and financial accounting. At that time, leaders in the Office of Management and Budget knew which agencies would likely lead these efforts, though official designations didn’t start coming until a year later. Once designated, the respective lead agencies got to work developing long-term plans to build out marketplaces for shared services, contract vehicles for others to purchase from and governmentwide standards for everyone to follow. More information is posted on the NextGov website.

President’s Science and Technology Council: Highlighting a historic level of diversity, White House officials released the names of 30 individuals from industry and academia who will advise the president on science and technology issues. “The members represent the most diverse [Presidential Council of Advisors on Science and Technology] in U.S. history,” according to a White House announcement Wednesday. “This PCAST reflects the president’s commitment to build an administration that truly looks like America: For the first time ever, women make up half of PCAST, and people of color and immigrants make up more than one-third of PCAST.” The new council “include[s] experts in astrophysics and agriculture, biochemistry and computer engineering, ecology and entrepreneurship, immunology and nanotechnology, neuroscience and national security, social science and cybersecurity, and more,” the White House release said. The council will be co-chaired by Director of White House Office of Science and Technology Policy Eric Lander, and—for the first time—two women. One, Frances Arnold, is a biochemical engineer who won the Nobel Prize in chemistry and started companies working on agriculture and sustainable fuels. The other, Maria Zuber, is a trailblazer for women in geophysics and planetary science with experience leading experiments on missions at NASA. More information is posted on the NextGov website.

Question: Can I generate budgets for multiple years from the Year-1 budget in Streamlyne?
Answer: Yes! You only need to input the Year-1 budget and then click on the “generate all periods” button. Stremalyne will create budget sheets for the remaining periods. You can then go to “summary” under the budget tab to review budget sheets for all periods. You can also change specific budget items that you allocated in Year-1 but you do not want to continue them in the following periods.
