Breakfast with Interim Provost Atam Dhawan
https://www.njit.edu/provost/breakfast-interim-provost
Informal breakfast sessions with small groups from the NJIT community will be hosted by the Interim Provost each Tuesday from 8.30 AM to 10.00 AM at the University Club, Eberhardt Building. These breakfasts will provide NJIT faculty, staff and students the opportunity to ask questions, give feedback, and engage with the Interim Provost on their experiences, concerns, expectations and needs. Energy Awards $14 Million to Improve Climate Change Modeling: According to the weather experts at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the total financial impacts of extreme weather events over the past five years—more than $740 billion—have been the most costly on record. To deal with the escalation of extreme weather events, the Energy Department announced Thursday $14 million in funding for 22 projects focused on improving climate change predictions and modeling. The projects, spread across 11 states, the District of Columbia and Canada, will be carried out by staff at 18 universities and two research organizations. Brain Stimulation Can Rewire and Heal Damaged Neural Connections: The connections between the neurons in your brain enable you to do amazing things, from brushing your teeth to solving calculus equations. When these connections become damaged, often as a result of conditions like stroke or traumatic brain injury, these abilities can be lost. Directly activating neurons with tiny pulses of electricity, however, can help rewire these connections and potentially restore function. Doctors currently use this technique, called neurostimulation, to treat conditions like Parkison’s and depression. We believe that neurostimulation has the potential to not only treat symptoms but also cure a wider range of diseases by repairing damaged connections. However, it has been unclear how to best fine-tune stimulation to specifically target damaged connections within the brain. More information is posted on the NextGov website.

TMF Announces $95 Million in New Funding Focused on Security and Networks: The Technology Modernization Fund announced new investments in the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Trade Commission to support a reduction in legacy systems and new projects that will put agencies on the path towards implementing enterprise-wide zero trust security frameworks. The awards include $64 million for USDA to help reduce its legacy systems from 17 to one, as well as to support cybersecurity improvements for the Food Safety and Inspection Service and the Food and Nutrition Service. TMF is also putting $3.9 million towards FTC's establishment of a new security operations center, which the General Services Administration said will allow the agency "to better protect sensitive data and scale security operations to meet future threats." The fund is also providing DHS' Security Information Network (HSIN) service with a $26.9 million investment as the agency seeks to overhaul its information sharing platform for the private sector and government partners, including first responders and law enforcement.
