ICYMI: New Jersey Innovation Fellows Program Will Provide Grant Funding and Mentorship to First-Time Entrepreneurs
The New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA) today announced plans to create a competitive program - the New Jersey Innovation Fellows (NJIF), which will offer mentorship and grants of up to $400,000 to teams of first-time entrepreneurs. The program will provide income replacement so that entrepreneurs can devote their full-time attention to building out their startups. The announcement follows yesterday’s NJEDA Board approval of this new program.
The Innovation Fellows program will support would-be entrepreneurs, particularly diverse entrepreneurs, with “income replacement” grants. This resource creates an opportunity for the entrepreneurs to pursue unique startup business ventures with the security of initial income replacement funding in the two-year ideation and formation period of their businesses. Per program policy and in accordance with the legislation, approved teams will be qualified to receive $200,000 as a base award, and up to $200,000 in bonuses (resulting in a total $400,000 award). Bonuses include $50,000 if any one of the entrepreneurs in a team resides in an Opportunity Zone within the State. An additional $50,000 bonus is awarded for each Entrepreneur leader on the Fellows team with a diversity self-certification or education bonus up to $150,000, resulting in a total potential award of $400,000. Awards will be disbursed over eight quarters to teams that meet and maintain compliance milestones.

Energy Announces $74 Million to Strengthen Advanced Battery Manufacturing: Ten projects will receive a total of $76 million in funding from the Energy Department to develop emerging technologies around electric vehicle battery reuse and recycling, according to an agency announcement Thursday. The Energy Department’s latest investments are designed to strengthen the production of advanced batteries that power electric vehicles. New and emerging technologies and means to recycle existing advanced electric vehicle batteries will reduce reliance on critical battery minerals, including lithium and graphite, which are expected to increase in cost by as much as 4,000% in coming years. According to DOE, improving the reuse and recycling of electric vehicle batteries will strengthen the nation’s energy dependence and reduce the odds of future reliance on “an unreliable foreign supply chain.”

ICE Needs More Data to Monitor Foreign Students Taking US Research, Watchdog Says: Immigration and Customs Enforcement may need to update one of its databases to capture more data about the risk of foreign entities obtaining U.S. technology via international students, according to a Government Accountability Office report released on Tuesday. According to GAO, the federal government spends billions of dollars annually to conduct research at American universities. But some of this research may be performed by foreign students and scholars, which could pose a risk of foreign influence and American technology and research being transferred to foreign entities. AI, Data Analytics Star as Biggest Planned Investments for 2023: 2023 stands to see a continued investment and development in emerging technology systems, with artificial intelligence leading the technologies private companies are planning to leverage. Detailed in a new 2023 industry forecast from Info-Tech Research Group, an IT analyst firm, private sector companies are expected to continue adopting more advanced technologies into their everyday business operations, regardless of any broader economic slowdowns. While AI turned out to be the most popular technology businesses reported planning to contract for the 2023 fiscal year, with 44% of surveyed respondents saying they are planning to invest in AI systems by next year, data infrastructure was another hot topic for industries aiming to modernize their tech infrastructure. “After AI, the two technologies gaining the most momentum in new investment are data lake or lakehouse and data fabric or mesh, with both seeing a 5% increase in the number of organizations planning to invest in 2023,” the report reads. “These platforms facilitate better access to enterprise data and enable real-time reporting.” The goal for both of these technologies is to make data-driven decisions at the corporate level easier, with more accessible, digestible data analyses. AI is likely to intersect with this task, as automated algorithms are being used to organize and compile data visualizations. More information is posted on the NextGov website.
