Provost Summer Research Fellowships
The NJIT Provost Undergraduate Research and Innovation (URI) Summer Fellowship Program is a 10-week program that provides summer stipend support ($5,000 each) to undergraduate student awardees from all disciplines to pursue research under the guidance of a faculty advisor on a competitive basis. Eligible undergraduate students should apply online with their proposals following the instructions provided below. The program concludes with presentations at the NJIT International Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium in late July.

Online Application Submission Deadline: February 19, 2024 by 4:30pm
Faculty Support Letter Due: February 22, 2024 by 4:30pm
Eligibility: Any current NJIT student who will be enrolled as an undergraduate in the immediate Fall semester may apply.
Program Requirements: Please consider the following requirements carefully before applying.
- Fellowship students should not be engaged in outside employment or coursework during the program period. Participation requires full-time engagement by the student.
- All Fellowship students are expected to fully participate in all aspects of the program and fill-out the time-sheet for hours of work with their respective advisors.
- All Fellowship students are required to participate in the NJIT International Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium in late July.
- Fellowship students are highly encouraged to mentor a high school student on the project during the program period.
Notification of acceptance will take place by early April.
Awards
The Dr. James Stevenson Innovation Awards are awarded at the conclusion of the URI Summer Fellowship Program. There will be first, second and third place overall winners as well as Honorable Mentions for Bioscience and Bioengineering, Environment and Substantiality, Material Science and Engineering, Data Science and Management and Robotics and Machine Intelligence.
Jim Stevenson was a Corporate Fellow at Honeywell International from 1996 until his retirement in March of 2011. His professional work at Honeywell focused on polymer and composite materials and applications for mechanical and electronic structures and enclosures in an aerospace environment. Nine patents and 17 publications followed from this work.
After retirement from Honeywell, Dr. Stevenson founded a consulting company, Stevenson PolyTech LLC, which specializes in polymer material/ process development and industrial short courses with more than 45 presentations worldwide. During his retirement, Dr. Stevenson helped to organize and funded the TechQuest competition which, now in its seventh year, awarded five innovation prizes and fellowships to NJIT undergraduates. He was also instrumental in setting up Innovation Day which celebrates the numerous technical awards won by NJIT undergraduates and hosts electronic presentations of their many innovative projects. Jim served as a member of the URI External Advisory Board and predecessor organizations since 2012. Jim and his wife Steffi also supported endowed undergraduate scholarships for NJIT students primarily from Irvington and Newark high schools. In 2017, Jim received the Special Friend of the University award for outstanding contributions by a non-alumnus. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Honeywell retirees association.

Yes. If the Faculty letter of support isn’t received your proposal will not be reviewed for participation in the Summer URI Program.
You must follow the format in all sections of the guidelines for a fair review process.
No. It is not possible to provide any extensions due to time constraints of the program.
Immediately after the deadline, all proposals are sent to the External Advisory Board for review. No revisions will be accepted after the deadline. However, if you would like to submit a revised version BEFORE the deadline, you may resubmit a new application.
All proposals are reviewed by the External Advisory Board with the published criteria. Due to the constraints of the program, there is no appeal process. All decisions are made by the External Advisory Board and are final.
All proposals will be reviewed according to the following criteria:
- Problem statement and significance
- Needs: Market and/or research needs
- Innovation and potential impact
- Results and work done
If you are selected to receive the fellowship, you will receive an email with a link to accept the terms and conditions of the program. You may decline at that time. If you accept, you are expected to comply with the terms and conditions of the fellowship including:
- pursuing full time research for the duration of the entire program
- presenting your research project at the URI Summer Research Symposium.
Yes. You are required to submit a one page abstract in the required format (details to be provided at a later time) to be included in the book of abstracts for the symposium that will be posted online. For reference, please see the 2022 Book of Abstracts here.
The program requires you to work full-time on your research project, but with special permission from the faculty advisor and the Office of Research, you can work to create a schedule that has evening courses. Alternatively, you may work on a schedule to pursue full-time research while requesting approval to take any course.
You will receive a detailed agenda of the Summer Research & Innovation Symposium with your specific time of presentation a few days before the event. You will be required to upload your final presentation and you will be notified by a date that will be determined at a later time.
Yes. All presentations will be made in person and judged before the External Advisory Board for the selection of the Dr. James Stevenson Innovation Awards.
