New Jersey Health Foundation Grants Program
We are pleased to announce a new award cycle for our New Jersey Health Foundation Grants Program. New Jersey Health Foundation has awarded over $80 million through this program since its inception.
Faculty and personnel from your organization will be eligible to apply for a grant beginning September 14, 2026. For this cycle, applications will be accepted from September 14, 2026 through November 16, 2026. The anticipated grant start date is March 1, 2027. More detailed information, including the Policies & Procedures and FAQ’s for each program can also be found on our website.
Here is a snapshot of the procedure:
- After adhering to all your applicable school protocols for submitting a grant request, an applicant submits his/her proposal through the application portal. The link to the portal will be available on the New Jersey Health Foundation website.
- Following the submission deadline, applications are reviewed by the New Jersey Health Foundation review committee, composed of members of the New Jersey Health Foundation Board of Directors plus members of the medical, pharmaceutical, and business communities.
- After the review process, all applicants will be notified by e-mail as to the status of their applications and next steps. New Jersey Health Foundation does not release final scores or comments.
- Final narrative and financial reports for awarded grants will be due by April 28, 2028.

The U.S. National Science Foundation is investing $90 million over five years to support three new NSF Science and Technology Centers (NSF STC). These centers will advance American leadership in science and technology, strengthen the nation's STEM workforce, and accelerate innovation in fields ranging from artificial intelligence and biotechnology to fusion energy and robotics.
The three centers will bring together researchers from universities, national laboratories, industry, and other partners to pursue ambitious, collaborative research. Each center will receive approximately $6 million annually for an initial five-year period, with the opportunity to compete for up to five additional years of support.
- The Center for Transformative Explorations in Multi-Physics and Engineering of Scientific Turbulence (TEMPEST), led by Michigan State University, aims to tackle one of the most challenging problems in physics and engineering: understanding and controlling turbulence. Turbulence is the chaotic, multiscale motion of fluids and plasmas and plays a critical role in fusion energy and national security applications, yet scientists still cannot reliably predict how complex turbulent systems behave across vastly different scales.
- The Center for Genome Intelligence Engineering (GENIE), led by Northwestern University, will develop new ways to understand cell function with the goal of learning to prevent and potentially reverse declines in cell function. Researchers will study how DNA is organized in 3D, which helps determine each cell’s identity and function.
- The Center for Human and Robot Co-Adaptation, led by The University of Texas at Austin, will study how people and robots can securely and effectively adapt to one another as service and assistive robots become more common in homes, hospitals, workplaces, and public spaces.

Funding the future: A look back on federal tech investment: In 1992, Klee Dienes was an MIT undergraduate working as a manager of the university’s web server and paying for cheeseburgers with student loans. Around him, a government research network called ARPANET was becoming the internet.
One day, he demonstrated MIT’s internet research to a visiting senator from Tennessee named Al Gore, who was pushing legislation to fund the network’s expansion. At the time, the internet “really wasn’t a sure thing,” Dienes said. The public and private sectors have different functions, Dienes said. Industry “innovates by iterating very quickly on things that it hopes people will pay for,” while the government “can act on things that are purely for the benefit of society,” he added. His path tracks the story the country is marking this year as the United States turns 250. The internet is the most famous technology the federal government helped build, but it is far from the only one.
For over two centuries, the government has funded technologies decades before any market existed for them and tolerated failures no investor would accept. Now artificial intelligence is testing whether the country still makes those bets. More information is posted on the NextGov website.

Tech bills of the week: Ban on AI superintelligence; AI oversight at the Pentagon; and more: Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., introduced legislation Thursday mandating a complete halt in superintelligent AI development, stipulating that the advancement of any system that can surpass human intelligence must permanently cease. The Ban Artificial Superintelligence Act also temporarily pauses the development and deployment of advanced AI systems until a federal regulator has established safety guardrails.
“The leaders of the major AI companies publicly acknowledge that they do not fully understand the technology and that it is escaping their control,” Sanders said in a press release. “It is irresponsible for society to allow them to move forward and make these products even more advanced. That’s why I am introducing legislation to immediately pause the development of increasingly powerful AI and ban the creation of systems that humanity cannot fully control — at home and around the world. The future of humanity cannot be left in the hands of a handful of Big Tech oligarchs.”
Beyond the ban on superintelligent AI and the pause on advanced AI, Sanders’s bill also creates a new cabinet-level federal agency whose purpose is to safeguard the public from AI risks and hazards, advised by an Artificial Intelligence Advisory Board. The board itself will be composed of AI experts to provide independent technological and scientific advice. More information is posted on the NextGov website.
