The Solar System Science program solicits proposals for research, data analysis, data preservation, and tools that support investigations to help ascertain the content, origin, and evolution of the Solar System and the search for life’s origin, evolution, distribution, and future in the universe. The Planetary Science Division is committed to supporting the most meritorious research, data analysis, data preservation, and tools development, and encourages efforts that involve emerging fields, systems science, and convergence research that works across disciplines to solve compelling scientific problems. In addition to hypothesis-driven science typical (albeit not required) of a research proposal, proposals are also solicited for: • The development of new laboratory analytical instrumentation, combinations of analytical instruments, or new components of analytical instruments that lead to significant improvements in the accuracy, resolution, or sensitivity of measurements compared with the existing state of the art, and to enable new types of measurements of astromaterials.
The analysis of planetary data (e.g., mission, ground-based) including: the generation of higher-order data products; archiving data sets or products; generation of new reference information, such as laboratory measurements; and creation of geologic maps. • The development and dissemination of software tools that facilitate the use of existing datasets, or that would enable or enhance future science investigations. Each proposal to this program element must address a priority of the Planetary Science Division (See Section 1.1), describe any data and resources that would be utilized, the proposed methodologies, how the investigation would achieve the proposed goals, and a timeline for project completion.
